About Steinmetz

Stephen Steinmetz (b. 1966) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Sculpture with a minor in Art History in 1991 from the University of Florida. Currently living in St. Augustine, Florida, he has been an artist throughout his entire life. His showings in the early years included gallery and museum exhibitions, but ultimately his art career was put on hold while he successfully ran his family’s retail business.

Now returning full-time to his calling, Steinmetz is creating some of the most impressive canvases of his life. Dr. John Leroux, curator at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Canada, feels that “Stephen’s paintings are remarkable. They are monumental, energetic, and bristling with dynamism without being chaotic. He is an exciting master of contemporary painting.”

Steinmetz’s planar style uses simplistic forms and colored volumes arranged in complex compositions that he executes briskly and confidently. His art speaks to the vivacity of our time while throwing a handcrafted challenge to the omnipresent digital behemoth that we live in. From small to larger works, Steinmetz creates twisting, morphing universe that does not shy away from a poignant 21st-century awareness of the act and privilege of painting.
